What is TENS?

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) is the use of continuous, low frequency electric currents to stimulate the nerves for therapeutic purposes. It blocks the pain signal from travelling to the brain and therefore reduces the sensation of pain.

Although no one likes to experience it, pain is necessary because it is the body’s natural way of telling you that something is wrong. Pain can be categorized in different ways—one of them being Acute & Chronic.

Acute Pain is usually more intense and comes on suddenly from soft tissue damage. It has a limited duration and typically doesn’t last longer than 6 months. Chronic Pain on the other hand is persistent. This type of pain continues even after the injury has healed. Pain signals are still being sent months or even years later.

TENS Stimulation releases endorphins and blocks pain signals from travelling to your brain, thus reducing the sensation of pain. TENS frequency is pretty much a non-invasive, drug-free alternative to masking the pain.
